Artist Statement
My name is Shane Junop, I am a stone carver and artisan based in Saskatoon, SK. My artistic journey is deeply rooted in the prairie landscape, where I find inspiration in the hidden beauty and intricate geology of natural stone.
My process begins on the prairie, where I select stones that resonate with me, often starting with an impromptu sketch directly on the surface. By relying on intuition to guide my carving, I define natural lines and graceful curves that evolve into both figurative and abstract forms. This approach allows me to maintain a direct connection with the local medium while capturing the unique essence and soul of each piece.
In my work, I strive to embrace the natural world and the primal landscapes of the prairies. My goal is to draw out the artistic potential hidden within each stone, creating a harmonious union between human expression and the environment.
